Local food and markets

Guangxi cooking is lighter and more sour than that of neighbouring Hunan and Sichuan, with a strong emphasis on rice and fresh river produce.

Rice noodles

Guilin rice noodles are the everyday dish, served with a spiced broth, pickled vegetables, peanuts and a little meat. They are eaten at any hour and cost very little in the small shops that specialise in them.

Beer fish

A Yangshuo speciality: river fish braised with beer, tomatoes, peppers and garlic. It is usually ordered whole and shared.

Markets

Morning markets sell produce, river fish and local fruit, and the periodic village markets around Yangshuo follow a rotating calendar that visitors can ask about locally.
